Dissertation Abstract:

The aim of this research in prehistoric linguistics is the analysis of
linguistic relations and affinities among three linguistic families of the
Tupian stock - Mawé, Awetí and Tupí-Guaraní - by means of the
historic-comparative method. In order to understand the historic development of
these families, the analysis of systematic phonological, grammatical and
semantic correspondences among the languages Proto-Tupí-Guaraní, Awetí and
Sateré-Mawé was carried out. The diachronic analysis of both phonology and
grammatical structure took into consideration semantic changes, loanwords and
contact induced language change in order to evaluate the possibility of
postulating intermediary proto-forms between these languages and Proto-Tupí.
Afterwards, the comparative reconstruction permitted to recover linguistic
prehistory, in so far as it  approximated earlier linguistic reality, and
allowed to recover information pertaining to prehistoric Tupian culture and
society prior to European invasion, as a means of contributing to the linguistic
hypothesis concerning the identification of the original homeland of these
groups, interethnic contacts, as well as possible routes of expansion. This
research also aims at a linguistic account of Tupian history; the writing of
such a historic narrative, however, can only be accomplished by means of a
multidisciplinary approach that takes into consideration the vast amount of
information gathered by other sciences, such as ethnology, ethnohistory,
archaeology, history, and genetics. This study is divided in two parts: the
first one refers to the historic-comparative linguistic research, and the second
one deals with historical matters. The transition between them is established by
a chapter dedicated to linguistic paleontology. Each part is preceded by an
introductory chapter which deals with methodology, procedures and theoretical
approaches. Information concerning the research proper, the languages dealt with
in this study and the linguistic communities are presented in a general
introduction.
