Meeting Description:

The Advanced School of Modern Languages for Interpreters and Translators (SSLMIT) and the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in Translation, Languages and Cultures (SITLeC) of the University of Bologna at Forlì present the First International Conference Logo - npit1 {2012} on Non-professional Interpreting and Translation. The aim of this conference is to provide a forum for discussion in a relatively recent and often neglected field of language and cultural mediation.

Despite being a hugely spread and submerged practice, non-professional interpreting and translation has always been the poor relative of both interpreting and translation studies and, as such, neglected and under-researched by academia and condemned by professional categories. By bringing together researchers from various disciplines this conference aims to bring to the fore and provide a forum in which researchers and students will be able to share information, perspectives and experiences of non-professional interpreting and translation, and explore a plurality of theoretical, methodological, ethical and disciplinary approaches related to the study of this form of linguistic and cultural mediation. 

Call for Papers:

The First International Conference on Non-Professional Interpreting and Translation (NPIT1) Organizing Committee invites proposals for presentations on any theoretical, empirical and methodological aspect of research related to the conference theme.

The official conference language will be English.

Three categories of proposal will be considered:

- Individual presentations
- Panels
- Posters.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

- Natural/native translation/interpreting
- Ad hoc translation/interpreting
- Adult/child language brokering (oral and/or written)
- Adult/child cultural brokering
- Family interpreting
- Literacy brokering
- Brokering between deaf adult signers and hearing groups
- Non-professional church/religious interpreting and/or translation
- Non-professional media interpreting and/or translation (fansubbing, fandubbing, fanfiction, news, talk-shows, the web, etc.)
- Non-professional interpreting and/or translation in the field of:
- War/conflicts
- NGOs
- Asylum seeking
- Health care
- Community and social care
- Legal and police
-Interdisciplinary and/or mixed-method approaches to the study of Non-professional Interpreting and Translation

Proposals for Individual Papers or Posters:

For individual presentations and posters, a 300-word abstract (plus references) should be submitted via the NPIT website (http://npit1.sitlec.unibo.it) by 15 September 2011. Abstracts will be double-blind peer-reviewed reviewed anonymously by the NPIT Scientific Committee and will be evaluated in terms of their relevance to the theme of the conference as well as their theoretical background and research design. Each paper presentation should be scheduled for 20 minutes.

Proposals for Panels:

Panels are collections of four paper presentations offered in 120 minute time blocks and organised around one of the particular themes listed in the call for papers (http://npit1.sitlec.unibo.it/call4papers.htm). All four presentations included in each panel will be individually reviewed.

Panel organisers are required to submit electronically via the NPIT1 website:

A general overview abstract (500 words including examples and references) describing the whole panel (by the deadline August 31, 2011) which will include:

- List of invited contributors and/or discussants (name, affiliation, email address)
- A maximum of 8 keywords covering the subject, methodology and theoretical framework(s)
- All the individual abstracts (300 words including examples and references)

Moreover, they are also required to:

- Coordinate the submission of abstracts by contributors before the same deadline as above
- Chair their panel
- Ensure that all the speakers register for NPIT1 by the deadline for speaker registration (15 April 2012)

Submission for individual papers and panels will open on the NPIT1 conference site from 15 March 2011.
