================================================================

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Type of Work: Language Materials Development

Linguistic Field(s): Computational Linguistics
                     Morphology

Duration: 17-May-2011 to 02-Sep-2011
Compensation: Paid Competitive
Internship Location: Los Angeles, California, USA
Minimum Education Level: No Minimum
Special Qualifications: Required: Familiarity with the Arabic-Persian script and its specific Unicode encoding issues.

Required: Experience in linguistic field work or corpus work.

Required: A strong, well-developed ability to write scripts or computer programs that manipulate textual data, sufficient to write a rule-based morphological analyzer.

Desired: Familiarity with Pashto or a related language.

Desired: Experience in computational morphology.

Description:
The project will develop a morphological analyzer for Pashto, an Iranian language with rich morphology and limited computational resources. The project will make use of available grammars and lexicons, but given the fragmentary nature of existing resources we expect that there will be a significant effort of research on the morphology of Pashto itself.

The intern will collect a corpus of Pashto text from available electronic news sites and other resources as appropriate, and expand the corpus throughout the duration of the project. The intern will develop a rule-based morphological analyzer that can correctly handle the expanding corpus, consulting available grammars. A lexicon will be developed concurrently with the analyzer.
