Meeting Description:

EUROSLA is a society for people with a research interest in Second Language 
Acquisition. We run an annual conference for our members. Some of the 
contributions are published in our annual publication Eurosla Yearbook.


The 21st Annual Conference of the European Second Language Association will be organized by Stockholm University, Sweden. The conference will start in the morning of 8 September 2011 and close at lunch time of 10 September.

Call for Papers:

Proposals for papers, posters, and thematic colloquia on all areas of second language acquisition research are welcome. Paper and poster proposals should not have been previously published. Each author may submit no more than one individual and one co-authored abstract. All submissions will be reviewed anonymously by the scientific committee and evaluated in terms of originality, clarity, and significance of findings and conclusions.

Deadline for submissions: 15 February 2011

Individual papers and posters:

Papers will be allocated 30 minutes - 20 minutes for presentation and 10 for discussion.

Posters are intended as a format for work-in-progress reports.

Submissions for papers and posters should be written in Word, Times New Roman, 12 pt, and include the following (/in this order/):

1. Name and affiliation of the author(s);
2. First author's email address;
3. Type of presentation intended: i.e. paper or poster; 
4. The broad thematic areas in SLA research which best describe your proposal. The purpose of these designations is to simplify the process of distributing the abstracts to suitable evaluators. Please select 2-3 keywords from among the following list: Theories and methods; Universal Grammar; Functionalism; Processing approaches; Interactionist approaches; Lexicon; Grammar; Phonology; Reading; Writing, Listening; Speaking; Language attrition; Instructed SLA; Psycholinguistics and SLA; Neurolinguistics and SLA; Social context and SLA; L2 use; Cross-linguistic influence; Individual differences; Age effects and ultimate attainment; L3 acquisition/learning/use; Others (please be specific). 
5. Title of the paper;
6. Abstract (max 300 words, excluding references and title).

Thematic colloquia:

The Thematic colloquia will take place in three-hour slots in parallel to other sessions. Each colloquium will focus on one specific topic, and will bring together key contributions to the topic. The recommended structure of a colloquium is 10 minutes of introduction, 5 papers (30 minutes each), and 20 minutes of general discussion.*

Submissions for thematic colloquia should be written in Word, Times New Roman, 12 pt, and include the following (/in this order/): 

1. Name and affiliation of the author(s);
2. First author's email address;
3. Type of presentation intended. Please indicate 'Thematic colloquia'. 
4. The broad thematic areas in SLA research which best describe your proposal. The purpose of these designations is to simplify the process of distributing the abstracts to suitable evaluators. Doctoral student workshop:

The doctoral student workshop is intended to serve as a platform for discussion of ongoing PhD research within any aspect of SLA. PhD students are invited to submit an abstract for a 15-minute presentation focusing on theoretical or methodological issues. Students whose abstracts are accepted will then be required to send their paper to a discussant (a senior researcher) by 1 June 2011. The discussant will lead a 15-minute feedback/discussion session on their work. 

Submissions for the Doctoral student workshop should be written in Word, Times New Roman, 12 pt, and include the following (/in this order/):

1. Name and affiliation of the author(s);
2. First author's email address;
3. Type of presentation intended. Please indicate 'Doctoral Workshop' 
4. The broad thematic areas in SLA research which best describe your proposal. The purpose of these designations is to simplify the process of distributing the abstracts to suitable evaluators. Please select 2-3 keywords from among the following list: Theories and methods; Universal Grammar; Functionalism; Processing approaches; Interactionist approaches; Lexicon; Grammar; Phonology; Reading; Writing, Listening; Speaking; Language attrition; Instructed SLA; Psycholinguistics and SLA; Neurolinguistics and SLA; Social context and SLA; L2 use; Cross-linguistic influence; Individual differences; Age effects and ultimate attainment; L3 acquisition/learning/use; Others (please be specific).

Student stipends:

Five stipends of 200 euros each will be available for doctoral students.  

When submitting your abstract please indicate in the email body that you wish to apply for a stipend, and include the following information:

1. Name, institution, and address of institution;
2. Curriculum vitae (attached);
3. Status as Eurosla member (i.e., number of years you've been a member), and the number of Eurosla conferences attended;
4. Official confirmation of being a PhD student;
5. Statement (email) from supervisor or head of Department that the applicant's institution cannot (fully) cover the conference related expenses. 

Selection of stipend recipients will be done by a special committee appointed by the organizing committee in connection with the abstract reviewing process. Criteria for selection will include Eurosla status and abstract topic and quality. All applicants will be notified prior to the start of the conference.

Language policy:

Following the EUROSLA association policy, EUROSLA 2011 will be multilingual conference. Presentation in any European language is acceptable. However, abstracts must be written in English. Delegates who wish to give their presentation in another language than English are asked to notify the organizers by 30 April 2011.*

Publication of papers:

A selection of papers presented at Eurosla 2011 will be included in the EUROSLA Yearbook.*
