Proposed new MA in Language & Cognition in the Philosophy Department at
King's College London

The Department is planning to introduce a new MA in Language & Cognition in
2011-12. The degree will focus on issues at the interface of Philosophy of
Language, Cognitive Science, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Psychology,
Formal and Computational Linguistics, and Logic. It will offer a choice of
modules in these areas, in conjunction with two core modules in the Theory
of Grammar, and the Theory of Meaning. The degree will be assessed by sat
examinations, essay-based coursework, and a dissertation. This is a unique
interdisciplinary programme that will give students an introduction to
leading work in Philosophy of Language and Mind, Linguistics, and Cognitive
Science. Applications are particularly invited from students with prior
backgrounds in any of these fields, who now wish to build upon that
foundation by branching out more widely into the others (although
applicants from any other background will also be considered). The
programme will provide an excellent basis for PhD research in these areas.

The co-convenors of the MA in Language & Cognition will be Shalom Lappin
and Wilfried Meyer-Viol. The availability of the degree in 2011-12 is still
subject to College approval. It is likely that such approval will be
granted early in 2011: but, until the programme has been officially set up
by the College, it will not be possible for students to apply for it
directly. To work around this, interested students should instead direct
their applications towards the general MA in Philosophy programme
(http://www.kcl.ac.uk/schools/humanities/depts/philosophy/prospectivegraduate/apply.html),

but they should include a clear note in the 'personal statement' section of
the application, to indicate that what they actually wish to be considered
for is the MA in Language & Cognition.

shalom.lappin at kcl.ac.uk.
