Meeting Description:

The 2011 Annual Meeting of the Linguistics Association of Great Britain will be held at the University of Manchester, from 7th to 10th September. The local organisers will be Yuni Kim, Andrew Koontz-Garboden, Ludovica Serratrice and Nuria Yáñez-Bouza. The Meeting will last four days and will feature several special events, listed below.

1. The Henry Sweet Lecture 2011 will be delivered by Professor Mark Liberman (University of Pennsylvania) on the evening of 7th September, with the title 'Towards the Golden Age of Speech and Language Science'.

2. The Linguistics Association Lecture 2011 will be delivered by Professor Colin Phillips (University of Maryland) on 10th September, with the title 'What is a Mental Grammar?'

3. There will be a special workshop related to Mark Liberman's Henry Sweet Lecture, on 7th September organized by John Coleman, entitled 'Using Large-scale Speech Collections in Phonetics and Phonology Research'.

4. There will also be a special themed session on 10th September, related to Colin Phillips's Linguistics Association Lecture, with the title 'The Psycholinguistics of Grammar', for which abstracts are now invited. These should be submitted in the same way as abstracts for the general sessions, but should be clearly marked as intended for the special session.

5. There will be a Language Tutorial on Tundra Nenets, given by Dr. Irina Nikolaeva (School of Oriental and African Studies).

6. The LAGB Education Committee will hold a two-hour session on the UK Linguistics Olympiad (a competition in which school children solve linguistics data problems). Members of the UKLO committee will explain the history, the aims, and the achievements so far, of the olympiad; present some samples of the problems children have to solve; and invite questions and discussion.

Further details will soon be made available on this website:

www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/home/dick/ec/ecsessions.htm

Call for Papers:

Both members and non-members are invited to offer papers for the Meeting. The LAGB welcomes submissions on any topic in the field of linguistics; papers are selected on their (perceived) merits and not according to their subject matter or theoretical framework.

The normal length for papers delivered at LAGB meetings is 25 minutes (plus 15 minutes discussion).

The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 4th April 2011. Details of how to submit and abstract can be found in the call for papers, available to download from the LAGB website:
