================================================================

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Description:
The LINGUIST List has a limited number of internships available during summer 2011 (May-August), tenable in the LINGUIST offices in Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor, Michigan. These internships pay a modest wage and are available for 3 months, between May 15 and August 15. The dates can be adjusted to accommodate the schedule of the successful applicant. Interns will primarily work on NSF or NEH projects designed to develop the cyberinfrastructure of linguistics (additional information below). Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in the normal workings of the LINGUIST List and to learn about the interaction between linguistics, computers and research, working alongside LINGUIST's regular staff of both linguistics and computer science students. Application packages should include a brief letter describing your interest in and suitability for an internship, as well as your possible start and end dates. It should be accompanied by a resume and a list of courses taken, showing your GPA. Deadline for applications is February 15th, 2011. Successful applicants will be contacted after March 1st, 2011. You may send your application documents via email to Maria Moreno-Rollins, Asst. Project Manager of The LINGUIST List, at maria linguistlist.org. Interns may expect to work on one or more of the following cyberinfrastructure projects: GOLDComm (http://linguistics-ontology.org): this project is designed to develop the General Ontology for Linguistic Description (GOLD) and enhance the ability of the average linguist to find structured data via intelligent GOLD-aware searching. MultiTree (http://mulitree.org/): this project will create a digital library of scholarly hypotheses about language relationships. Each hypothesis is presented graphically as an interactive hyperbolic display of a family tree, accompanied by information on all of the languages involved and the authors and bibliographical sources of the hypothesis. LL-MAP: Language and Location: A Map Annotation Project (http://llmap.org/): This joint project of Eastern Michigan University and Stockholm University is designed to integrate language information with data from the physical and social sciences by means of a Geographical Information System (GIS). LEGO: Building on the linguistics ontology, GOLD, LEGO (Lexicon Enhancement via the GOLD Ontology) has is developing a multi-lexicon search facility which uses GOLD-aware tagging to provide fine-grained morphosyntactic searching of 17 lexicons and over 3000 wordlists. RELISH (Rendering Endangered Lexicons Interoperable through Standards Harmonization): This joint project of LINGUIST List, U. of Frankfort, and the Max Plank Institute for Psycholinguistics is designed to standardize digital lexicon formats used by the LEXUS lexicon creation tool and the LEGO project (see above). Six lexicons of endangered languages will be made interoperable. Interns will work 40 hours a week and receive a stipend of $1200 US per month. Housing is not provided, although LINGUIST will assist you in finding accommodations. International applicants must have a visa that permits them to work in the USA. LINGUIST List may be able to help applicants obtain a J-1 visa; however this is not guaranteed, as the administrative procedures involved have not yet received university approval. Some of the past interns at LINGUIST List have opted to pursue an MA at Eastern Michigan University and continue working at LINGUIST List as Graduate Assistants.
