Description:

PHD studentship in natural language processing

Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation
School of Informatics
University of Edinburgh

The Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation (ILCC) at the
University of Edinburgh invites applications for a three-year PhD
studentship starting in academic year 2011/12. ILCC is dedicated to
the pursuit of basic and applied research on computational approaches
to language, communication and cognition.

The studentship is associated with the EPSRC project 'An Integrated
Model of Syntactic and Semantic Prediction in Human Language
Processing.' The aim of this project is to develop a model that
combines probabilistic incremental parsing with compositional
distributional semantics in order to achieve a broad-coverage account
of human language processing that can simulate reading time data. The
project will also apply this model to NLP tasks such as text
simplification.

The student will be supervised by Dr. Frank Keller and Dr. Mirella
Lapata, and will work on a topic drawn from following research areas:

- probabilistic parsing, including incremental parsing, unsupervised
  parsing, and crosslinguistic parsing

- distributional models of semantics, including compositional and
syntax-aware vector-space models and topic models

- models of human language processing, including models that integrate
  syntactic and semantic processing

- models of eye-tracking data in reading, including applications such
  as text simplification

The successful candidate will have a good honors degree or equivalent
in computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, computer
science, or a related discipline. He/she will have strong programming
skills and previous experience in natural language processing, e.g.,
in parsing, distributional semantics, or probabilistic modeling.

The studentship covers maintenance at the research council rate of
around GBP 13 500 per year, plus tuition fees at the EU/UK rate.
Applications are restricted to uk/eu citizens. The start date of the
studentship is flexible, but can be no earlier than September 1, 2011.

If you have further questions, please contact Dr. Frank Keller
(keller at inf.ed.ac.uk) or Dr. Mirella Lapata (mlap at inf.ed.ac.uk). To
apply, please follow the instructions at:

http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/informatics/postgraduate/apply/

As your research area, please select 'Institute of Communicating and
Collaborative Systems'. On the application form under 'Research
Project', please state 'EPSRC Studentship: SynSem'.

IMPORTANT: After submitting your application through the website,
please email your applicant number to keller at inf.ed.ac.uk.

Application deadline: August 1, 2011.

Applications received after the deadline may be considered, but this
cannot be guaranteed.

Application Deadline: 01-Aug-2011
