Meeting Description:

The conference provides an international forum for current issues of and recent advances in diachronic and synchronic toponymic research. The aim is to bring together researchers and graduate students working within the domains of linguistics, onomastics, geography and related disciplines.

Peter Jordan (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien)
Lorenza Mondada (Université de Lyon) 

Call for Papers:

This call for papers invites abstracts addressing issues concerning place names within the framework of toponomastics, linguistics and connected approaches.

The abstract should state the main point of the paper and give an outline of its argument. It should make explicit on which empirical data and/or theoretical concepts it is based and describe the way in which the paper contributes to the development of the field. 

Papers should address issues of particular importance in place name research. For instance, we would be interested in papers exploring such topics as: 

- Epistemology of toponomastics 
- Language and name contact in multilingual societies and at language boundaries 
- Name theory with an emphasis on toponyms
- Typologies of toponymic systems
- Collection and documentation of place names 
- Social attitudes towards place names and naming practices in past and present
- Toponyms in discourse and conversation 
- New approaches to place name research
- Visualisation of toponymic data via Geographic Information Systems.

Of course this is just a sample of topics; we hope to include a wide variety of papers on diachronic and synchronic research on place names.

Abstracts for three kinds of submissions can be proposed: panels, individual papers, and posters. All abstracts have to be anonymous. Only one abstract as single/first author and a second as co-author can be submitted by one person.

Panels (deadline: September 30, 2011):

Proposals for panels with 3-6 speakers are welcome. Panel proposals should be submitted in two steps: 

(i) A general description of the panel (400 words) with the name(s) of the panel conveners and the names of the expected speakers should be submitted via e-mail (contact at topotrends2012.org) by September 30, 2011.
(ii) If the panel is accepted, abstracts of the panel's papers (max. 400 words) should be submitted individually by the speakers through the Conference website (http://topotrends2012.org) by November 30, 2011. 

Papers (deadline: November 30, 2011):

Spoken presentation time for papers will be 20 minutes + 10 minutes of discussion. 

Individual presentations should be submitted with an abstract of max. 400 words. The submission will be done through the Conference website (http://topotrends2012.org). 

Posters (deadline: November 30, 2011):

A specific slot will be provided within the programme for poster sessions.

Poster proposals should be submitted with an abstract of max. 400 words. The submission will be done through the Conference website (http://topotrends2012.org).
