Meeting Description:

Due to the internationalization of markets and technological advancements in communication media, the contexts in which organizations operate have become increasingly multicultural, multilingual and multimodal. The 11th European Conference of the Association of Business Communication (ABC Europe 2012), hosted by the department of Business Communication Studies at the Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, aims to address themes and issues in Business Communication research, teaching and practice that have emerged as a natural consequence of these market and media developments. The conference theme is 'Beyond Boundaries, Multicultural, Multilingual and Multimodal Diversity in Business Communication'.

Business Communication researchers generally focus on identifying the impact of market and media developments on communication practice and effectiveness; they are concerned with identifying and trying to solve corporate or individual-level communication issues. Business Communication teachers are committed to helping professionals and preparing students for increasingly complex communication tasks and communication management in the workplace. And Business Communication professionals are currently confronted with diverse cultures, languages and media opportunities that form a challenge for their communication with both internal and external stakeholders. The 2012 ABC Europe Conference aims to promote dialogue across disciplinary and national boundaries, and between researchers, academics and business professionals, on how to deal effectively with emergent issues in Business Communication research, teaching and practice. 

Call for Papers:

The conference organisation welcomes evidence-based research papers based on diverse methodological techniques, ranging from corpus analyses to experiments to surveys to interviews. It is open to various (multi)disciplinary analytical frameworks, including rhetorical analysis, (critical) discourse analysis, ethnomethodology, semiotics, genre analysis, intercultural pragmatics, and sociolinguistics. We particularly encourage proposals introducing innovative (multi-method) research approaches. Papers supporting evidence-based research by means of proposing theory-based research agendas are also welcomed. 

The 2012 ABC Europe Conference will organize a special teaching track on innovative educational methods aimed at preparing students or trainees for the multicultural, multilingual and/or multimodal workplace. In this teaching track, presenters will be given the opportunity to showcase their (proposed) educational methods in brief workshops. Therefore, we welcome papers on the basis of which the (proposed) educational methods can be illustrated for a live audience. 

Conference Themes:

Proposals for contributions are welcomed on a wide spectrum of corporate and organizational communication disciplines involved in stakeholder management in (international) business and institutional settings. Topics include, but are not limited to: 

- Management-employee communications 
- Intercultural communication & management 
- Marketing communications 
- Investor relations 
- CSR communications 
- Public Relations 
- Issues management & crisis communication 
- Multinationals' language policy & BELF 
- Media choice 
- Social media communications 
- Multimodal corporate communication 

Should you wish to organize a panel session on any of these conference topics, please contact the organizing committee and feel free to present your suggestions to them (abc2012 at let.ru.nl). 

Guidelines for Submitting Proposals:

1. Proposals:  

Proposals should include an abstract which is limited to 300 words, excluding references. Please indicate: 

- what conference theme(s) your proposal is related to; 
- whether it is related to research or teaching; 
- if it is related to research, what analytical framework(s) it relies on; 
- whether you would prefer to present a poster rather than a paper on the conference.

Please provide your email address with your proposal submission. Online submissions of proposals are due before October 15, 2011. 

2. Review of Abstracts: 

Your proposal will be peer reviewed and you will be informed of the result via email by February 1, 2012.
