NetWordS: The European Network on Word Structure
Cross-disciplinary approaches to understanding word structure in the
languages of Europe
First Call for Proposals
Travel grants for short visits and exchange grants.
Morphologically complex words represent a fundamental part of
linguistic knowledge and the basic building blocks of language
productivity. Nonetheless, words remain a challenging realm of
scientific inquiry, at the interface between lexicon and grammar,
requiring integration of a number of orthogonal disciplines and
approaches, ranging from psycho- and neuro-linguistics to theoretical,
variationist and historical linguistics, to memory processes and
computational models of (sub)symbolic processing. As part of an effort
to provide a platform for morphological research, the European
Science Foundation has installed the networking program NetWordS
devoted to the study of word structure.
The chief aim of the network is to bring together experts of different
scientific domains and different theoretical inclinations to advance our
current awareness of the theoretical, typological, psycholinguistic,
computational and neurophysiological evidence on the structure and
processing of words, with a view to promoting novel methods of
research and assessment for grammar architecture and language
physiology.
NetWordS now invites proposals for travel grants for so-called short
visits (up to 15 days) and so-called exchange visits (from 15 days to six
months) to support collaborative morphological research in Europe.
Successful applicants will be invited to present their projects at a
workshop to be held in the fall or winter of 2012 (date and venue to be
determined). Separate funds will be available to support attendances.
The short visits program is seeking proposals that will bring together
teams of researchers (across separate countries) to enrich the field
through collaborations. These collaborations will ideally involve
investigators from different disciplinary backgrounds, working on
projects that combine methods and insights from their respective fields
to open up new perspectives on word structure. Projects proposals
need to involve at least two researchers from two different European
countries.
Reimbursement of travel expenses will be administered through the
ESF. Short Visit Grants cover actual travel expenses up to a maximum
of 500 EUR per participating site, plus a per diem of 85 EUR.
Applications for Short Visit Grants include the following items:
- a description of the project work (about 250 words) and the aim of the
visit
- CV of applicant of maximally 2 pages, incl. a list of (selected)
publications
- researcher(s) involved (incl. short CVs) and the research institution to
be visited
- proposed dates and estimated travel costs*
The exchange visits program is primarily geared towards junior
researchers (PhD students or post-docs) and is seeking proposals that
enable researchers to pursue more long-term collaborations on larger
projects. These collaborations will ideally bring together investigators
from different disciplinary backgrounds, with younger researchers
profiting from, for example, the expertise of a more senior collaborator
in a different country or the experimental facilities available at the host
institution. Projects proposals need to involve at least two researchers
from two different European countries.
Exchange Visit Grants are reimbursed on the basis of an allowance of
1600 EUR per month/400 EUR per week/57 EUR per day plus actual
travel expenses up to a maximum of 500 EUR. Due to budget
constraints, upon receiving notification of acceptance of their proposal,
applicants could be invited to curtail duration of their visits.
Applications for Exchange Visit Grants include the following items:
- a description of the project work (about 1000 words) and the aim of
the visit
- a CV of maximally 2 pages, including a list of (selected) publications
- a letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the applicant's
work
- a letter of acceptance by the host institution
- proposed dates and estimated travel costs*
Applications to either program should be submitted by email to info-
networds at ilc.cnr.it.
Overall, up to 40 grants will be available.
Deadline for applications: September 5th 2011
Notification of results: by November 30th 2011
Following the ESF guidelines*, preference will be given to projects
involving researchers from countries with ESF member organizations
contributing to this networking program, but proposals involving a non-
contributing country will also be considered. A list of the contributing
countries and application forms are available at www.networds-esf.eu
