Call for Contributions
Proposal for a scientific network on Multimodality and embodied interaction
to be submitted to the German Research Foundation (DFG)

Organisers:
Cornelia Gerhardt, Saarland University, Germany
Elisabeth Reber, University of Wuerzburg, Germany

We are submitting a proposal to the German Research Foundation (DFG) for a
scientific network on ''Multimodality and embodied interaction''.

The scientific network is intended to give young researchers (but also more
experienced ones) the opportunity to meet and work together on projects
concerned with multimodality and embodied interaction within individual
workshops organised by the network organisers. Network members will receive
grants to cover travel expenses to these workshops, which will be held
during a period of up to three years, starting from autumn 2012.

Goals of the network:

Fuelled by the advent of the video-camera in research, issues of
multimodality and embodied interaction have found a lot of recent attention
in research informed by Conversation Analysis/Interactional
Sociolinguistics/Interactional Linguistics.

At the most general level, the goal of the proposed network is to explore
the role of multimodal issues in a range of contexts involving social
interaction. Analytic interests include interaction, taking account of a)
all dimensions of visible bodily behaviour (i.e. gaze, facial expression,
gesture, bodily posture and proxemics) and vocal resources (i.e.
linguistic, paralinguistic), and b) different linguistic and cultural
communities (e.g. Brazilian Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, English, French,
German, Italian, and Wolof).

Projects assembled in the network aim to analyse how interactants use
linguistic resources situated in a larger semiotic context, i.e. in
interdependence with visual signals, such as e.g. gaze, gestures, or body
posture, but also with pictures, sounds etc. in their meaning making.

Developing further methodology and working towards a theory of multimodal
interaction, the network combines interdisciplinary, cross-linguistic and
-cultural, and interactional aspects in its research.

In doing so, the network has the following specific goals:
1. To work towards a common terminology/taxonomy for the study of
multimodality and embodied interaction
2. To develop methodological tools for the comprehensive, simultaneous
investigation of all modes involved
3. To take a comparative perspective on various levels, i.e. language,
culture, type of interaction (everyday/institutional, ontogenesis, social
variables)
4. To take an interdisciplinary approach bringing different traditions to
multimodal interaction together

The network's main output will consist in the research by its individual
members, together with specific collaborative efforts, such as the
publication of an edited volume and a special issue of an international
journal.

In addition, the following joint products of the network are envisaged:
- a website to facilitate contact and the exchange of documents among
network members in between network meetings and to document the results of
the discussions within the network (including the work meetings) for the
wider academic community
- a collection of different data sets (e.g. video recordings) to be shared
between the network members

To apply for the participation in our network, we welcome proposals
connected to the research interests of the network and with a
methodological background in Conversation Analysis/Interactional
Sociolinguistics/Interactional Linguistics and related approaches. Please
note that the maximum number of participants in the network is limited to
15 of which 4 will be assigned through this call for contributions. Because
of the DFG regulations, a maximum of 2 out of the 4 places can be assigned
to scholars not resident in Germany. We especially welcome applications
from scholars working with non-German data. Please include an abstract of
your intended project and a short CV in your application.

Abstract Submission:

The abstract should be no longer than 400-500 words in English and contain
the following information:
- title of the proposed project,
- your name,
- your affiliation,
- contact email address,
- the main point or argument of the project,
- a brief discussion of the problem or research question with respect to
previous research and the work's relevance to the aims of the network,
- information on the theoretical background,
- information on the methodology,
- a description of the data on which the research is based,
- conclusions and/or first results of the research.

Submission deadline: 3 August 2011.

Notification of acceptance by the network organizers: 24 August, 2011

Submission of network proposal to the German Research Foundation: 5 October
2011

Notification of acceptance by the German Research Foundation: 6-9 months later
