Institution/Organization: Northumbria University
Department: Humanities
Web Address: http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/

Level: MA / MSc

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics

Description:

The Linguistics Subject Group in the Department of Humanities at Northumbria
University is pleased to invite applications for its three new MRes degree
programmes.

The MRes Language and Cognition programme explores the relationship between
language and cognition from a linguistic and psychological point of view and
introduces students to a broad range of research methodologies, from corpus
analyses to eye tracking and ERPs. This unique interdisciplinary programme
builds on two areas of particular research strength at Northumbria: cognitive
linguistics in the Department of Humanities and psycholinguistics in the
Department of Psychology (School of Life Sciences), and it taught jointly by
both departments. It will appeal to graduates of English language, modern
languages, linguistics, psychology, and cognitive science. Further details are
available from

http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/static/5007/sasspdf/MResCognition.pdf

The more traditional MRes in Linguistics and MRes in English Language programmes
are designed for students who have an interest in any area of the broad field of
linguistics which may include, but are not limited to:
- language structure
- discourse analysis
- language and meaning
- language acquisition
- language variation
- linguistic theory
Further details are available from

 http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/static/5007/sasspdf/MResLinguistics.pdf

Although the programmes may be taken as stand-alone degrees, it is anticipated
that a significant proportion of the students will continue on to a PhD; hence
there is a strong emphasis on research methods and independent research.

We are also able to offer four studentships for the MRes Language and Cognition
and a total of a further four studentships for the MRes Linguistics and MRes
English Language in the form of a fee-waiver for full-time study from September
2011. The application deadline for studentships has been extended to 7 July
2011, with interviews taking place w/c 25 July 2011. Full details are available
on our website at:

http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/sd/academic/sass/mreswaiver/?view=Standard

Successful applicants should have at least an upper-second class honours
undergraduate degree (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
Applicants for whom English is not their first language should have an IELTS
score of 7 (or equivalent).

If you have any further questions please contact the Programme Leader, Andrew
Feeney (see contact info below).
