Meeting Description:

Workshop organized as part of the Annual Conference of the German
Linguistic Society (DGfS) to be held in Frankfurt/M., Germany, March 7th -
9th, 2011.

Variation is rightly seen as a key feature of grammatical systems: it adds
considerably to their complexity. On account of this, the description,
modelling, and explanation of variation can be regarded as the touchstone
for any grammatical theory. We would like to approach the subject from a
syntactic angle and focus on three dimensions of variation (as well as the
varieties associated with them):

1. The horizontal/diatopic dimension (dialects)
2. The vertical dimension between 'standard' and 'substandard' (regiolects)
3. The idiolectal dimension, i.e. variation within one speaker's utterances

Only recently have these dimensions attracted attention of typological and
generative approaches; they have, however, turned out to be valuable
empirical supplements in many cases. This potentially requires a
reconsideration of the theoretical and methodological basic assumptions. 

Call for Papers:

We invite you to submit an abstract for a talk that deals with the
dimensions of variation mentioned above. We especially welcome papers that
relate to the following questions on an empirical basis:

1. In what sense can syntactic variation be used as a correction for
modelling and theory construction?
2. What are appropriate methods for gaining, analyzing, and interpreting
data in syntactically oriented variational linguistics?

Submission Guidelines:

All submitted abstracts should be written in English or German and limited
to one single-spaced A4 page (plus one optional page for illustrations and
tables). Feel free to send your abstract in MS Word, OpenOffice, or (La)TeX
format, but make sure to include a PDF copy as well. Please send your
abstract to schalleo at staff.uni-marburg.de.

Notification of acceptance: September 12th, 2011
