University or Organization: SFB 632, University of Potsdam
Job Location: Potsdam, Germany
Web Address: http://www.sfb632.uni-potsdam.de/index_en.html
Job Rank: PhD Position

Specialty Areas: Semantics; Syntax; Information Structure

Required Language(s): Burmese (mya)
                      Thai (tha)
                      Vietnamese (vie)

Description:

The Collaborative Research Centre 632 ('Information Structure') is
searching for a part-time researcher to work in the DFG-funded project
'Focus realization, focus interpretation, and focus use from a
cross-linguistic perspective', supervised by Prof. Dr. Malte Zimmermann
(http://www.sfb632.uni-potsdam.de/projects_a5eng.html). The successful
candidate will be in charge of the focus semantic research activities on
South East Asian languages.

The position is open as of 1 July, 2011. The contract ends with the end of
the project in June 2015.

Candidates are expected to have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in
Linguistics, a solid background in formal semantics AND/OR theoretical
syntax, and a genuine interest in carrying out semantic fieldwork (in South
East Asia). Given the focus on South East Asian languages, some
acquaintance with Burmese (Tibeto-Burman), Thai (Tai-Kadai), Vietnamese
(Mon-Khmer), or other South East Asian languages is desirable, as well as
some general knowledge of information structure. Previous experience with
fieldwork will be an additional asset. Duties include the designing and
conducting of semantic fieldwork, the theoretical analysis of the empirical
results, as well as the publication of empirical and theoretical results in
form of research papers and talks.

Candidates are expected to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of
Potsdam within the integrated Graduate School of the research center. The
topic of the thesis should be related to the aims and objectives of project
A5. Applicants interested in pursuing a PhD within the frame of the
projects' research questions are therefore especially encouraged to apply.

The salary and social benefits are determined by the German pay scale for
state employees (Entgeltgruppe: 13 TV-Laender, Tarifgebiet Ost,
corresponding to an initial salary of 1990 EUR/month (pre-tax)). The
University of Potsdam is an equal opportunity employer.

Interested candidates are invited to send their applications, including a
letter of motivation and a CV with the names and contact details of two
referees and (links to) a sample of their work, preferably by email.
