Meeting Description:

Over the past decade, a wide range of scholars have been working on projects that seek to clarify what multilingualism means- whether those scholars are housed in psycholinguistics, literature, translation studies, second language acquisition, history, linguistic anthropology, computer science, or education departments. But rarely do these researchers have the opportunity to speak with one another in a transdisciplinary setting about their findings. Meanwhile, the phenomena that we call 'multilingual' or 'monolingual' are changing before our very eyes- amid the rise of social networking, hypertextuality, national security discourses in Europe and
North America, the industrialization of translation, and new phenomena of global migration.

Featured Speakers:

Doris Sommer (Harvard University)?Ira Jewell Williams, Jr. Professor of Romance Languages and Literature, Director of Graduate Studies in Spanish; author of Bilingual Aesthetics: A New Sentimental Education, Duke University Press, 2004.

Supported by a generous Collaboration and Innovation Grant from the UofA's newly founded Confluence: A Center for Creative Inquiry, this international symposium on April 13-15, 2012

This International Symposium at the University of Arizona is designed to bring working scholars and teachers together to take stock of our collective paradigmatic advancements in multilingualism, monolingualism, plurilingualism, and the like, over the past two decades. We will take this two-and-a-half day opportunity to discuss with one another the "What's next?" in theoretical and critical approaches to our shared arena of inquiry.

Abstracts for paper submissions will be solicited in August 2011.
