Humanities at the Limit

The institution known as 'the university' derives its name from the Latin universitas meaning 'the whole'. Therefore, the university is an institution comprised of humanities, social sciences, theater arts, and natural and physical sciences. Due to recent closures in modern language departments across the United States, the universitas of the university has been severed. Consequently, there is a need to redefine what the humanities are in the twenty-first century and more specifically the role of the modern languages and literatures departments in the new humanities. 

In this conference we are looking to re-examine the position of Romance languages, literatures, and cultural studies. The time has come to re-engage the debate on what humanities are, (specifically looking at Romance languages, literatures, and cultural studies) and what our vital function is within the universal whole of higher education. 

Call for papers

Deadline for submissions: August 1, 2011

Possible subjects include:

-Shaping the universitas student for the universal world through studies of culture, literature, and second language acquisition 
-Reading new forms of communication as cultural texts: media, film, internet
-The future of modern language departments in the new or post humanities
-The importance of teaching culture through language
-Sociolinguistics: constructing individual/cultural identity through language
-Modern interpretations of historical change in the Romance languages

Send an abstract of 250 words with a proposed title as an attachment in Microsoft Word or PDF to UBRomance at gmail.com. All abstracts as well as presentations should be in English.
