Call Deadline: 15-Apr-2011

Meeting Description:

General Session on
Parameters in Language Design

2011 Seoul International Conference on Generative Grammar will be held at Sogang University, Seoul, Korea, on August 16 - 19, organized by the Korean Generative Grammar Circle.

While we especially encourage submissions touching on the theme of the general session specified above, equal consideration will be given to papers from all areas of generative grammar, which may include syntactic theory, syntax-semantics interface, syntax-morphology interface, syntax-phonology interface, syntactic acquisition, and others. The conference will consist of the general session, an additional workshop, and a series of lectures from the keynote speaker. The theme of the additional workshop is as follows:

Workshop on Inside and outside of Nominal Projections

We find plenty of instantiations of crosslinguistic variation in nominals: case morphology, word order variation, the numeral and plural morphology, and so on. Recently, Giorgi and Müller (2010) argue that word order variations within nominals can be captured by the reprojection of NP without assuming that D is the head of the nominal projection. On the other hand, Watanabe (2006, 2010) argues for the at least four functional projections above NP to account for the structural diversity of the numeral/classifier combination along the line of Longobardi (2001), but contrary to the argument of Chierchia (1998) and Fukui and Takano (2000). Given Chomsky's (2001) claim that parametric variation is restricted to the lexicon, especially to a narrow category of morphological properties, primarily inflectional, in this workshop we invite papers that deal with the issues concerning the parameterization of noun-related functional categories and the variations in nominals. We also encourage the research on the differences between nominals and clauses and on the interactions between nominals and other sentential categories.

Call for Papers:

While we especially encourage submissions touching on the theme of the general session specified above, equal consideration will be given to papers from all areas of generative grammar, which may include syntactic theory, syntax-semantics interface, syntax-morphology interface, syntax-phonology interface, syntactic acquisition, and others. The conference will consist of the general session, an additional workshop, and a series of lectures from the keynote speaker.

Abstracts should be submitted using the EasyAbs service of Linguist List. All you need to do is visit: http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/SICOGG13 and click on Abstract Submission. Then follow the online guidelines to upload your abstract. This can either be in .pdf or .doc format. Note that the latter is only acceptable if the abstract contains no special fonts. Only electronic submissions through the link above will be considered. Abstracts should be anonymous and may not exceed 2 pages (A4), including examples and references (embed examples within the text), with 2.54 cm (1 inch) margin on all four sides and should employ the font Times New Roman 12 pt. Submissions are limited to a maximum of one individual and one joint abstract per author. Abstracts should be sent no later than April 15, 2011.

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $67,000. This money will go to help
keep the List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form at

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return
(U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact
your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match
any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the
EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple
administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company
operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
