4 PhD positions in Linguistics: The Study of the Language Faculty starting
October 1, 2011 at the latest; vacancy number 681114. 

Successful candidates will be offered the opportunity to participate in the
'PhD rotation', a period of  several weeks within the period (June -
September 2011) during which they will acquaint themselves thoroughly with
the Institute and convert their research proposals into full-blown
workplans. The PhD rotation has as its explicit aims to allow students a
better grounded choice of supervisor and a head start into their projects.
Some form of financial compensation for the time spent in the rotation will
be negotiable.

Applicants should have an MA degree (or nearing completion, expected
graduation by the summer of 2011) in theoretical linguistics, computational
linguistics or experimental linguistics (language acquisition,
psycholinguistics, phonetics, text linguistics), or a linguistically
oriented background from a related field like psychology, information
science, communication studies, etc. Applicants should speak and write
fluent English.

For all projects, we offer a full-time PhD position to a maximum of 4
years, with a gross monthly salary starting at EUR 2.042,- in the first
year to EUR 2.612,- in the fourth year of appointment. We also offer a
pension scheme, a health insurance allowance and flexible employment
conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of
the Dutch Universities and are supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8%
per year. PhD students will undergo assessment after 18 months.

Applications (by e-mail) should include a 3-5 page project proposal
consisting of a research question well-grounded in existing literature,
supplemented with a research strategy, provisional plan and bibliography. 
The application should also include a letter of motivation, a curriculum
vitae including contact and personal details, transcripts of academic
results, an MA thesis or alternative piece of written work, certified
copies of most recent diploma and passport, and the contact details of two
referees (names, affiliations and phone numbers or e-mail addresses).
Preferably, reference letters are included.

Applications that do not include a research proposal will not be taken into
consideration. Candidates are free to come up with their own research
topic, but they are strongly advised to visit the UiL OTS research groups
document on the website and explicitly target their proposal at one or more
of the local research groups. Applications should be in pdf or docx/doc
format, with name and vacancy number (681114) specified in the message as
well as in the topic. Include a list of attachments in the message, and
specify your name in each attachment title. 

Receipt of your application will be confirmed within five working days. The
first round of interviews will be conducted during the first week of May,
either in person or by telephone. Results will be communicated to
interviewees by May 10. Candidates accepted for the second round may choose
to submit additional written work (for example, a finished MA thesis), or
certified copies of diplomas and passport (provided regular copies are
included in the original application). These additional materials should be
submitted to Maaike Schoorlemmer by e-mail by May 20, 2011. The second
round of interviews will be conducted in Utrecht on May 25/26, 2011. Final
decisions will be made by June 1, 2011. The preferred starting date for the
employment contracts will be October 1st, 2011.
