Call Deadline: 15-Aug-2011

Meeting Description:

GLiP-7
Generative Linguistics in Poland 7
with
A Special (Thematic) Session on Tense, Aspect and Modality and
A PhD and Graduate Student Workshop

Dates: 2-4 December, 2011
Location: Wroc?aw (University of Wroclaw, Institute of English Studies)

Sponsored by the Institute of English Studies, University of Wroclaw and by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP)

'Generative Linguistics in Poland' (GLiP) is a series of conferences on various aspects of generative linguistics, created by Piotr Ba?ski (University of Warsaw) and Adam Przepiórkowski (Institute of Computer Science, Polish Academy of Sciences). See http://generative-linguistics.pl/index.html for details.

GLiP meetings began as an attempt to bring together (i) Polish generative linguists, (ii) generative linguists working in Poland, as well as (iii) generative linguists working on Polish. However, the scope of GLiP has never been limited just to papers or authors belonging to the three categories. This year's GLiP meeting is a continuation of this idea.

This year's GLiP conference will be preceded by a PhD and Graduate Student Workshop on Friday, December 2, 2011.

Preliminary Registration (Important):

If you are (tentatively) interested in taking part in this conference, please, send your email address to GLiP-7 Organizing Committee (glip.wroclaw at gmail.com) so that we can create a mailing list. Most future announcements, changes, etc., will be mailed only to registered prospective participants (and not to general linguistic lists). Apart from that all the updates about the conference will be posted on the conference website.

Organizing Committee:

Joanna B?aszczak, University of Wroclaw
Krzysztof Migdalski, University of Wroclaw
Wojciech Witkowski, University of Wroclaw

Call for Papers:

We invite papers from any area of theoretical (generative) linguistics, including typology and diachrony, as well as experimental linguistics (psycholinguistics or neurolinguistics).

A Special (Thematic) Session on Tense, Aspect and Modality:

We broaden the scope of GLiP to also include papers on any aspect of Tense, Aspect and Modality, especially in exotic or less studied languages. This thematic session is organized as part of the project 'Understanding Linguistic Categories: Temporality at the Interfaces' sponsored by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP).

For details see http://www.ifa.uni.wroc.pl/trait

We are interested in particular in papers on the interaction between Modality and Aspect in the expression of actuality entailments or in the expression of future reference. Is it correct that Tense, Aspect and Modality can interact compositionally with each other to give the same range of meanings cross-linguistically? More specifically, are the meanings expressed in such a way really the same across different languages? Or should we rather expect to find semantic variation (e.g., in the sense that apparently equivalent modal operators across languages might turn out to have different (even very subtle) semantic and pragmatic properties)?

The format of the conference is 20 min for presentation + 10 min question time. Languages of the conference are English and Polish.

Submission Guidelines:

Abstracts must be anonymous and consist of no more than two pages (margins: 2.5 cm or 1 inch, character size 12 points, single spacing), including references, figures and data. Data should be included in the main text of the abstract. An individual may submit at most one single and one co-authored paper.

Abstracts should be sent in PDF format and submitted via EasyChair. For detailed information on submission visit http://www.ifa.uni.wroc.pl/linguistics/glip.html

To access the EasyChair login page click on 'GliP 2011'.

Please notice that for your submission to be completed you will need to indicate whether your abstract is to be considered for the PhD and Graduate Student Workshop, the Special (Thematic) Session on Tense, Aspect and Modality, or the General Session.

Papers presented at the conference will be published in 'Generative Linguistics in Wroclaw', an online series published by the Center for General and Comparative Linguistics at the University of Wroclaw.
