CALL FOR PAPERS

TIPA: Travaux interdisciplinaires sur la parole et le langage,
or Interdisciplinary Studies on Speech and Language

The next issue of TIPA will be a thematic one on experimental linguistics coordinated by
Philippe Blache.

Executive editor: Daniel Hirst
Guest editor for the issue 28: Philippe Blache
Chief editor: Martine Faraco
Assistant editors: Claudia Pichon-Starke ; Joëlle Lavaud

Experimental linguistics is a booming field today. This approach is based on a scientific
procedure which, following the example of applied sciences, begins by observing
phenomena associated with language and speech, puts forward a hypothesis to explain
these events, and then attempts to construct an experimental model that can be evaluated
in the light of empirical observation, hence with datas data. In this to-and-fro between real
speech /language and the laboratory, experimentation plays an essential role in the
elaboration and validation of hypotheses.

Every field of linguistics has room for an experimental approach. Thus, experimental
phonetics has been a firmly established field for many years, while laboratory phonetics is
also on the rise. For its part, psycholinguistics has always been backed up by this type of
method, and studies of the cerebral foundations of language now complement this
approach in offering the experience of neuroscience. In the same manner, other fields
such as syntax lend themselves to experimentation thanks to the study and processing of
data collected in large corpora.

A wide range of tools and methods have been used in the framework of this experimental
approach, ranging from perception tests to imaging, via computational modeling and the
acquisition of physiological data.

All contributions describing work using this approach are will be considered for this
special issue of TIPA. These may deal with a wide range of fields including, but not
limited to, speech production or perception, psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics,
computational linguistics, the study of speech pathologies etc.

Proposed articles should stress methodological aspects that form the basis of their
experimentation.

The objective of the forthcoming issue is to highlight interdisciplinary convergences arising
from the experimental approach: transferring methods from one domain to another is a
challenge of current experimental linguistics as it helps us to envisage new approaches to
the study of intersecting phenomena.

Calendar:

Submission deadline : June 30th- submission of proposed articles (title, abstract and
keywords)
