Call Deadline: 30-Jan-2012 

Current Issues in Language Planning is announcing a Call for Papers for a 
forthcoming issue on 'Language Planning in Urban Spaces'.

Cities are hubs where different languages meet. They can present spaces for 
innovative, forward-looking language planning practices to serve the best 
interests of the public. They are places where local authorities have 
significant capacity and instruments to provide equal opportunities for all 
residents, including those in poorer urban areas (e.g. favelas), where different 
language varieties than in the urban centre may be spoken.

How can urban multilingual ecosystems be harnessed effectively as a 
resource for economic development and social cohesion in city spaces? How 
can city services, action plans and practices be used to help build inclusive, 
resilient communities and contribute to a shared urban prosperity? 

We welcome empirical studies with a focus on (but not exclusively limited to) 
innovative language planning practices in urban spaces that:

-	embrace existing multilingualisms as a social resource 
-	take into consideration different aspects of accessibility (social, 
cultural, intellectual, physical, and financial)
-	improve accessibility and inclusion
-	bring together more discrete planning agendas at different levels
-	promote the development of social cohesion
-	impact on culture and economic development
-	ensure equal opportunities for all, including those in suburbs marked by 
extreme poverty and high unemployment
-	pool good practice for future planning directions
-	are creative.
