Students in French Linguistics gain a strong theoretical background and
methodological training that enable them to conduct extensive empirical research
on the French language. Areas of specialization within the Department include
historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, bilingualism, language contact and
language change, dialectology, second language acquisition, and language
production, perception and processing. The Department has an excellent placement
record for its graduates.

The program, which aims to train future French linguists who intend to pursue a
career in academic research and teaching, benefits from strong links with the
departments of Linguistics, Anthropology, Psychology, Education, Spanish,
German, Middle Eastern Studies, and Communication Sciences. In addition, the
University of Texas at Austin has a student and faculty research exchange with
the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, Netherlands.

Several long standing student-organized language and linguistics conferences are
held on an annual basis at the University of Texas at Austin, including SALSA
(Symposium about Language and Society-Austin), TexFLEC (Texas Foreign Language
Education Conference), and the TLS Conference (Texas Linguistics Society
Conference).

In addition, UT-Austin is now home to The Center for Open Educational Resources
and Language Learning (COERLL). The Center seeks to draw on and expand UT's many
open educational resources for language learning. One such resource, designed at
UT for the Internet public, is the globally popular Tex's French Grammar.
