Description:

AHRC Doctoral Studentship in English Language, January 2012-December 2014

This studentship is part of the 3-year AHRC-funded project, Mapping Metaphor
with the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary. The project will
undertake an empirical investigation of the foundations and nature of metaphor in
English using the unique evidence base of the recently completed and published
Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary. The project is led by Dr
Wendy Anderson (Principal Investigator), Professor Carole Hough and Professor
Christian Kay (Co-Investigators), all English Language, School of Critical Studies,
University of Glasgow.

The Doctoral Research
An important aspect of the project is a fully-funded doctoral studentship. The
doctoral work will be an in-depth study of an aspect of metaphor in the history of
English, and will be carried out under the supervision of Dr Anderson and
Professor Hough. There is considerable scope for the PhD student's project to be
shaped by his/her own research interests, in terms of a focus on a particular period
of English or a particular semantic category or group of categories. For example,
the student may choose to look at metaphor in Old English, or during the scientific
revolution, or within the semantic category of colour, or the category of
pleasure/enjoyment. If appropriate to the study, the student may choose to draw
on corpus evidence alongside evidence from HTOED. Alternatively, the student
may wish to consider the relative roles of metaphor and metonymy in a particular
period or semantic category.

The successful candidate will have at least the equivalent of an upper second
class degree in a relevant subject such as Linguistics or English Language,
preferably with some training in semantics.

Please see the School of Critical Studies webpage for further information about
this and other current PhD opportunities:
http://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/critical/ahrcstudentships/.

Instructions on how to apply can be found at the bottom of the webpage. In the
Project Proposal section of their applications, applicants should briefly outline the
kind of project that they would wish to undertake, and how it would relate to their
previous experience. Interviews are expected to be held between 14-16 December
2011.
