Meeting Description:

Topic and aims of the workshop:

On Friday, the 4th of November 2011, the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen will host a one-day workshop on the subject "Corpus - Communication - Culture: Linguistcs as Study of Culture". The event will be coordinated by the GCSC Research Area 5 "Culture, Language and the New Media". The workshop focuses on the interface between cultural studies research and linguistic research, examining it from different perspectives. It addresses the ever-recurring discussion about linguistic self-conception.

While communication plays an important role in cultural studies research and questions raised in cultural studies are vital for a linguistic analysis of communication, still, very often corpus-linguistic methods have not been applied in this context. For this reason these will be in the center of the workshop. The content of the presentations has been deliberately chosen to be open and may include presentations from a wide range of areas, such as sociolinguistics, text linguistics, media linguistics, intercultural communication, pragmatics and gender studies.

Through the combination of keynote presentations by young researchers and the following discussions (20 min. each), the workshop aims at illustrating productive connections of these areas, on the basis of concrete research projects.

The main focus of the presentations and discussions will be placed on how cultural studies and linguistics can work together successfully, and where boundaries and perspectives lie with regard to a possible methodological and thematic link.
