Meeting Description:

The International Symposium on Chinese Language and Discourse is a biennial symposium that advances the exchange of scholarship in discourse functional studies of the Chinese language, emphasizing an empirical orientation and encompassing such fields as language and society, language and culture, language and social interaction, discourse and grammar, communication studies, and contact linguistics. 

In 2012, the symposium will be held at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

2012 Symposium Theme: New Approaches to the Study of Chinese Grammar

Call for Papers:

Abstracts are invited for oral presentations (30 minutes, including 5 minutes for discussion) to showcase latest advancements in broadly-defined discourse functional studies of the Chinese language, with preference given to those closely related to the conference theme.

Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:  

1. Language and interaction
2. Language and society
3. Language and culture
4. Language and cognition
5. Corpora and Chinese studies
6. Language change and development
7. Chinese language acquisition and education
8. Chinese language and new media
9. Multilingualism and identity construction
10. Language contact

A one-page abstract should be submitted via Easy Abs at:

In addition to the Easy Abs submission, email the abstract as a .doc or PDF attachment to CLDSymposium at ntu.edu.sg, stating in the body of the email (i) Author's Last Name; (ii) Author's First Name; (iii) Affiliation; and (iv) Email. The abstract itself should be written in readable and plain English and must not include the authors' names and affiliations.  

Deadline for submission of abstracts: January 31, 2012
Notification of acceptance: End February/Early March, 2012

Best Student Paper Award:

A cash prize of the equivalent of SGD$400 will be awarded to a paper submitted and presented by a current student who has not had a PhD degree at the time of the symposium. Selection is based on both the content and the presentation. Those who wish to participate in the competition should indicate the intention with 'For Best Student Paper Award' marked on top of the abstract. A full paper is encouraged but not required for the competition.
