Meeting Description:

ACSI (Association for Canadian Studies in Ireland) will host the XVIth Biennial Conference in Dublin on 10-12 May 2012. The theme for 2012 is: 'Canada: Landscapes and Landmarks'.

The image of the 'land' is an ongoing trope in both past and contemporary conceptions of Canada, from the national anthem, to the flag, to the symbols on coins, the land and nature remain linked to the Canadian sense of belonging as well as to the image of the nation abroad. Linguistic landscapes reflect the multi-faceted identities and cultural richness of the nations. If earlier portrayals of the land focused on a rugged, unspoiled landscape, such as in the paintings of the Group of Seven, contemporary notions of identity, belonging and citizenship are established, contested and legitimized within sites and institutions of public culture, heritage and representation that reflect integration with the land transforming landscape into landmarks. The Highway of Heroes from the Trenton military base, Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site in Québec, the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa, The Rooms in St John's Newfoundland and Ireland Park in Toronto, are examples of landmarks that transform landscape into a built environment that endeavours to respect the land while using it as a site to commemorate, celebrate and promote Canadian identity. Similarly, in literature and the arts, the creation of the built environment and the interaction among those who share it is a recurrent theme. 

L'édition 2012 de l'Association irlandaise d'études canadiennes (AIEC) aura lieu à Dublin du 10 au 12 mai 2012. Le thème sera : « Le Canada : Espaces Physiques et Culturels ».

L'image de la 'terre' est une métaphore constante dans les conceptions passées et contemporaines du Canada. De l'hymne national au drapeau en passant par les symboles frappés sur les pièces de monnaie, la terre et la nature restent fortement liées au sens canadien d'appartenance et à l'image de la nation à l'étranger. Les espaces linguistiques reflètent les identités aux multiples facettes et à la richesse culturelle des nations. Si les premières représentations de la terre se concentrent sur des paysages accidentés et naturels, tels que ceux représentés dans les œuvres du Groupe des 7, les notions contemporaines d'identité, d'appartenance et de citoyenneté sont établies, contestées et légitimées au sein des sites et institutions de culture, héritage et représentation publics qui reflètent l'intégration de la terre dans la transformation des paysages en espaces culturels. Le Highway of Heroes de la base militaire de Trenton, Grosse Ile, le Irish Memorial National Historic Site à Québec, le Musée des Civilisation à Ottawa, The Rooms à St John's Newfoundland et Ireland Park à Toronto sont autant d'exemples d'espaces culturels qui transforment le paysage en un environnement construit, lequel s'efforce de respecter la terre tout en l'utilisant comme lieu de commémoration, de célébration et de promotion de l'identité canadienne. De même, en littérature et dans les arts, la création d'un environnement construit et l'interaction parmi ceux qui le partagent est un thème récurrent. 

Call for Papers:

We are seeking papers that consider the portrayal and interaction of the land and the landscape in social, cultural and literary spaces of representation. Possible topics could include (in French or English):

- The land and landscape in the arts and literature 
- Linguistic and cultural landscapes within the official bilingualism of Canada
- Spaces of memory and testimony
- State museums/institutions and representations of citizenship, identity and belonging
- Political management of the land and landscape 
- The transformation of the built environment and of public spaces 
- History, geography, heritage and the land and landscape
- Public spaces as sites of difference and diversity
- Diaspora, migrations, uprooting and 'heritage'

Abstracts:

Abstracts should be submitted before the 30th of November 2011 as a .doc or .rtf file to:

Abstracts should be no longer than 2 pages. On the first page note the name of your proposed paper, name, contact details and affiliated organisation; on the second page the title of your paper along with your anonymous abstract, 4 or 5 key words and cited references. The abstract should be no longer than 200 words. We welcome submissions in French or English. Abstracts should be written in the intended language of the paper. Presentations will be allocated 30 minutes (20 minutes followed by 10 minutes for questions).

Proposals will be anonymously evaluated by at least two members of the scientific committee.

Les propositions de communication pourront porter sur la représentation et l'interaction de la terre et du paysage dans les espaces sociaux, culturels et littéraires. Elles pourront inclure les thèmes ci-dessous (en anglais ou en français) :

- La terre et le paysage dans les arts et la littérature
- Les espaces linguistiques et culturels au sein du bilinguisme officiel du Canada
- Espaces de la mémoire et témoignage
- Musées/institutions d'Etat et représentations de la citoyenneté, de l'identité et de l'appartenance
- Gestion politique de la terre et des paysages
- Transformation de l'environnement construit et des espaces publics
- Histoire, géographie, héritage/patrimoine, la terre et le paysage
- Aspects économiques de la gestion des ressources
- Espaces publics comme représentation de différence et de diversité
- Diaspora, migrations, déracinement et 'héritage'

Propositions de Communication :

Les propositions de communication doivent être envoyées avant le 30 novembre  2011 sous format .doc ou .rtf à l'adresse suivante :

Elles tiendront en deux pages : sur la première page, titre de la proposition, nom, coordonnées et affiliation professionnelle ; sur la deuxième page, titre de la proposition ainsi que le résumé anonyme de 200 mots maximum accompagné de 4 ou 5 mots clés et des références citées. Les langues du colloque sont le français et l'anglais. Les propositions devront être rédigées dans la langue de communication. La durée prévue des présentations est de 30 minutes (20 minutes suivies de 10 minutes pour les questions).

Les propositions seront évaluées de façon anonyme par au moins deux relecteurs issus du comité scientifique.
