Date: 30-Mar-2012 - 30-Mar-2012
Location: Ann Arbor, MI, USA
Contact Person: Marlyse Baptista
Meeting Email: ucil-2012 at umich.edu

Linguistic Field(s): Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 20-Nov-2011

Meeting Description:

This undergraduate conference focuses on language variation and language contact and welcomes papers on Native American languages, African American English, endangered languages, mixed languages, and pidgins and creoles, among other contact varieties. The conference will include a special panel session that provides undergraduates with advice on applying to and succeeding in graduate school. Also, the undergraduate conference will be held in conjunction with the Weinberg symposium (held the previous day, March 29, 2012), which will bring together many prominent language researchers from around the world.

2nd Call for Papers:

We invite abstracts from undergraduate students in the areas of language variation/language contact for 20-minute talks followed by a 10-minute discussion period. Recommended length is 300 words, and no longer than 500 words as maximum. The abstract should summarize the main points to be covered in the talk and should indicate what research methods are employed and what the main findings are. It should also relate the work to existing research in the field.

Abstracts will be evaluated on the basis of clarity, argumentation and potential contribution to advancing linguists' knowledge of any aspect of language structure and/or use in the areas of linguistic variation/language contact.

Students working on any kind of language variation/language contact (including Native American languages, African American English, endangered languages, mixed languages and pidgins and creoles) are strongly encouraged to submit.

Accepted U.S.-based students will be fully funded for travel and accommodations and will be expected to attend the Weinberg symposium on March 29.

Abstracts must be submitted through Easy Abs at:

http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/UCLVLV2012

Abstracts are due by November 20, 2011 and notifications will be made by January 6, 2012.
