The Spanish Linguistics Graduate Students at Arizona State University are honored to invite you to our inaugural Hispanic & Luso-Brazilian Linguistics conference. The conference offers an opportunity for graduate students of Spanish and Portuguese linguistics to share their current research. Our keynote speakers will also present research on topics in Spanish SLA and Sociolinguistics.

The inaugural Hispanic & Luso-Brazilian Linguistics Conference will take place in Tempe, Arizona at Arizona State University on February 17-19, 2012.

Keynote Speakers:

John Lipski (Penn State), presenting sociolinguistic research on Portuñol/Portunhol
Robert Blake (UC-Davis), presenting on Language Learning Technology

Call for Papers:

The conference calls for linguistic analyses of all Spanish and Portuguese varieties, including the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, North America and Africa. These different empirical, historical or theoretical perspectives could be research on, for example: language contact, language instruction, linguistic typology, language in context, universal grammar or language in the social context. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

Dialectology and Language Contact
Pragmatics
Portuguese Linguistics
Sociolinguistics
Bilingualism and Code-Switching
Second Language Acquisition
Historical and Descriptive Linguistics
Syntax and Semantics
Language Typology
3rd Language Acquisition
Phonetics and Phonology
Applied Linguistics

Participants should send their abstracts to asulingconf2012 at gmail.com. The subject of the email should read 'Conference Abstract'. Please include: title of presentation, an abstract of the presentation (250 word max) in English, Spanish or Portuguese, author and school, email address, a brief CV (or attached) and any audiovisual accommodations required. We encourage students to submit abstracts as soon as possible.

Presenters will be admitted and notified on a rolling basis. The deadline for abstract submission is January 10, 2012. 

Presentations may be up to 15 minutes and in Spanish, English or Portuguese, followed by 5 minutes of discussion and questions.
