Abstract:
La langue des Abyssins a été désignée sous des noms divers: Amharique,
Amarigna, Amariñña, etc., appelations dérivées du nom d'Amara que se
donnent les populations chrétiennes de l'Éthiopie. La langue amharique
appartient au rameau dir "Joktanide" ou "Sabéen", des langues sémitiques,
mais elle a un charactère si particulier, qu'il est difficile de l'englober sans
réserves dans une classification aussi arbitraire. L'emploi des auxiliaires et
son système d'inversions, ainsi que sa syntaxe en général, l'en éloignent
profondément. D'un autre côté, une partie de sa conjugation la rattachent
d'une façon indiscutable aux langues sémitiques en général et à celles dites
sabéennes en particulier. On a appelé aussi ces dernières "langues
kouschitiques", nom qui s'appliquerait peut-être plus exactement aux langues
préexistantes de l'Éthiopie et du Soudan de la préface).
