The 5th International Independent Learning Association Conference returns to Aotearoa/New Zealand having been previously hosted in Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia. The conference will run from 30 August - 2 September 2012 at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

ILAC is an international conference for passionate teachers, learners, and researchers.

The conference theme is 'Autonomy in a Networked World: Te Tū Motuhake i te Ao Kōtuitui'. 

Call for Papers:

What is the theoretical and practical meaning of learner autonomy in the socially and technologically connected world we live in today? We invite conference participants to share their thoughts, research findings and practice in order to illuminate the relationship between the individual learner and the learning opportunities afforded by ever-changing learning environments. The conference sub-themes are intended to capture dimensions of this relationship: the personal, social and cultural identity of the learner, the self and the 'other' as agents of learning, the learning environment, and the role of assessment for the autonomous learner.

ILAC 2012 invites submissions of abstracts for the following presentation formats:
 
Presentation Formats:

1. Pre-conference workshop (full day or half day)
2. Papers 30 minutes, with 10 minutes for questions/responses
3. Thematic colloquia (short) 1.5 hours with 3-4 contributors or (long) 3 hours with 4-6 contributors
4. Interactive Independent Learning Fair
5. Swap shop to share practical resources and ideas: short - 30 minutes or long - 60 minutes
6. Posters (to be displayed at designated times throughout the conference)

Abstracts should address at least one of the key themes of the conference:

1. Framing learner autonomy in today's world - where we are now and where we are going
2. Autonomy and identity
3. Autonomy and agency (motivation and strategies)
4. Autonomy and learning environment (classroom, distance, technology-supported, language learning centres, etc.)
5. Autonomy and assessment

Abstract Submission Guidelines:
 
Please read the guidelines on how to make your submission before you start the submission process.
 
Don't worry if you do not have the final version of your submission right now. You will have the ability to log in and amend your details right up until the deadline for abstract submission closes on 4 November 2011. After this date, your submission will be sent for review for inclusion in the programme.
 
Evaluation of Proposals:

All abstracts will be double blind reviewed. Relevance to the themes of the conference, originality and applicability to the conference audience are key considerations in the acceptance of all submissions. The Conference Committee reserves the right to decline any submission without assigning reasons. All submitters will receive a letter confirming the outcome of their proposal.

Please note:

Each presenter may participate in a maximum of two presentations (excluding the Interactive Independent Learning Fair and pre-conference workshops), be it an individual paper, poster, or paper within a colloquium.

The organising committee reserves the right to accept your proposal under a different category for example accepting paper as a poster.

Conference Publication:

Authors of selected full papers will be invited to contribute a submission that will be published at a later date.
 
Timetable for Call for Papers:

The deadline for abstract submission is 16 December 2011.

Presenters will be informed whether their proposal has been accepted no later than 13 February 2012.

All presenters will need to have registered for the conference no later than 23 April 2012 in order to guarantee a place in the conference programme.
