Abstract:

This edited book deals with the linguistic encoding of emotions in the
following African languages: Tupuri, Dogon, Bantu-Botatwe group, Akan,
Hausa, Igbo, Wolof and Nigerian English Pidgin. The contributions included in
the volume present a variety of approaches and research perspectives
ranging from historical linguistics and ethnolinguistics to cultural-cognitive
and discourse analysis. Each chapter develops a different topic discussing it
in detail and from (what we believe to be) an original standpoint.

Topic of the book are: the concept of fear among the Tupuri (Elisa Fiorio); the
conceptualization of 'liver' in Dogon (Laura McPherson and Kirill Prokhorov) ;
the reconstruction of emotions in ancient Africa (Kathryn de Luna); 'anger' in
Akan (Gladys Nyarko Ansah); the role of Hausa ideophones in expressing
emotional states (Sergio Baldi); the semantics and syntax of Igbo verbs of
emotions (Maduabuchi Agbo); body and emotion in Wolof (Olivier Bondéelle);
the construction of emotion in clinical encounters in Nigerian English Pidgin
(Akin Odebunmi); 'love' encoding in Hausa (Gian Claudio Batic).
