Meeting Description:

The 43rd annual conference of the Australian Linguistic Society will be held at the University of Western Australia in Perth from Wednesday 5 to Friday 7 December 2012. Specialist tutorials/masterclasses will be run on Monday 3 & Tuesday 4 December preceding the main conference.

Call for Papers:

The Organising Committee invites abstracts for papers and posters. Expressions of interest are also sought for workshops and for Australian Linguistics Institute (ALI) Sessions.

Papers:

Papers will be of 30 minutes duration, consisting of a 20-minute lecture-style presentation followed by 10 minutes for questions/ responses.

Abstracts should be submitted online and will be reviewed by at least two reviewers drawn from the ALS2012 Organising Committee and/or independent experts. Guidelines for abstracts are provided: please ensure that your abstract meets the specific requirements for this conference.

Note that only ALS members are eligible to present at an ALS conference. Non-members presenting papers must take up membership by the beginning of the conference. Membership information is available here.

Themed Sessions:

We welcome proposals from groups who wish to present papers with a common theme in a named session of three papers. One person must be nominated as the organizer of the session and is responsible for co-ordination with the other authors. Abstracts for all papers must be submitted for review through the online submission system. The three papers must have different authorship. 

Posters:

There will be a Poster Session (time and date to be confirmed). Your poster should be no more than two A1 sheets and should be planned to include opportunities to discuss the material with interested individuals. Abstracts should be submitted as for papers.

Workshops:

We also welcome proposals for workshops: half day (6 papers), full day (9 papers) or longer. Workshop convenors are responsible for organizing the review of abstracts but must use the online abstract review system. Workshop proposals must be received by the ALS2012 organisers by July 23.

Australian Linguistics Institute (ALI) Sessions: 

To continue the tradition of ALI, we are also calling for expressions of interest in offering 3-hour or 6-hour course sessions for post-graduate students and academic colleagues. These will be held immediately before the main conference, on Tuesday December 4.

We expect that these will involve relatively small audiences (less than 20) for a high level of interaction with presenters. Proposers may wish to nominate one of the following categories: Tutorial, State-of-the-Art, Masterclass.

The deadline for expressions of interest is July 23. The Sessions topics will be announced on August 20.
