Dissertation Abstract:

The purposes of this study are to clarify the production and construal
principle of meaning and to establish the relationship between the meanings
of multisemy. Generally, polysemy has been viewed as a unique phenomenon
which is based on the perspective that one form is associated with a
meaning and mainly examined with cognitive growing semantics. It leads to
the problems that are not only distinguishing meanings but which are
meaningful. However, the part that consists of various meanings is where
there is no clear distinction between meaning and there is a problem that
the various meanings are offered under integrative usage, not under lexical
meaning. Therefore, it would be appropriate to explain the word meaning if
I revise the existing polysemy concept and approach it with the multisemy
concept in order to consider the perception holistically, depending on the
context.

Also, the point of the study of multisemy is to examine the relationship
between meanings. By the way, the study of the relationship has sought to
find out the similarity between meanings from the perspective of semantic
extension or derivation because the study has been done in a lexical
relationship. However, the problem rises from two points; one is that
semantic extension is hard to understand synchronically as it needs to be
covered from a historical perspective, the other is that it is impossible
to describe the derivation because of innumerable possibilities of it.
Therefore, I here will concentrate on understanding and explaining the
relationship between meanings synchronically with this perspective. We
can't see the meaning directly. It exists only as a hypothesis like those
of physical concepts. However, We recognize a variety of meaning which
corresponds to verbal form and is being used freely. Meaning is embodied by
usage only and what we know about a word is the information of the usage.
It is not important to know the ideal meaning separate from its context.
What we have to know is how to use it in reality. Therefore, it is
important that we understand meaning in different contexts.
