General Session on Three Factors and Syntactic Theory

2012 Seoul International Conference on Generative Grammar will be held at Dongguk University, Seoul, Korea, on August 6 (Monday) to 9 (Thursday), organized by the Korean Generative Grammar Circle. The conference will consist of the general session, an additional workshop, and a series of lectures from the keynote speaker. The theme of the additional workshop is as follows:

Workshop on Ellipsis

Ellipsis has been a central research area for many linguists. Elliptical constructions interest them because the meaning of the sentence cannot be directly recovered from the words it contains. Resolving this mismatch between meaning and sound yields various research topics, often specific but not limited to ellipsis itself: How can we characterize ellipsis? What are the conditions under which ellipsis takes place? Are these conditions syntactic, semantic, or pragmatic? Do the unpronounced parts of sentence involve syntactic representation? Recent studies on ellipsis also have (indirectly) opened a new window to the nature of syntactic phenomena, such as locality of movement and the nature of islands. Given this, not only does ellipsis raise interesting issues from cross-linguistic perspectives, but it also has become a key domain of research for linguists working on syntax, semantics, pragmatics and psycholinguistics. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers to (re)examine elliptical constructions and provide new insights to the existing views on ellipsis. 

Final Call for Papers:

The deadline of abstract submission has been extended to May 6, 2012.

While we especially encourage submissions touching on the theme of the general session specified above, equal consideration will be given to papers from all areas of generative grammar, which may include syntactic theory, syntax-semantics interface, syntax-morphology interface, syntax-phonology interface, syntactic acquisition, and others.

Abstracts should be submitted using the EasyAbs service of Linguist List. All you need to do is visit: http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/SICOGG14 and click on Abstract Submission. Then follow the online guidelines to upload your abstract. This can either be in .pdf or .doc format. Note that the latter is only acceptable if the abstract contains no special fonts. Only electronic submissions through the link above will be considered. Abstracts should be anonymous and may not exceed 2 pages (A4), including examples and references (embed examples within the text), with 2.54 cm (1 inch) margin on all four sides and should employ the font Times New Roman 12 pt. Submissions are limited to a maximum of one individual and one joint abstract per author. Abstracts should be sent no later than May 6, 2012.

Authors will be notified by May 15, 2012. Each speaker of the general and the workshop sessions will be allotted 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Accepted papers will be published in the Proceedings of 2012 Seoul International conference on Generative Grammar, which will be distributed to the conference participants. 

All presenters will be asked to provide camera-ready copies of their papers in publishable form by July 15, 2012. The text should be single-spaced and the general page limit is 20 pages including appendices and references.
