Meeting Description: 

Bridging the divide between the disciplines of History and Spanish & Portuguese Linguistics lies at the heart of this session. Focusing on Spanish and Portuguese contact varieties (e.g. Spanish-/Portuguese- based creoles like São Tomense, Cape Verdean, Papiamentu, Palenquero, Chabacano), the linguistic and history-oriented papers in this session will be mutually complementary: that is, their main purpose will be to illustrate how the study of one discipline can profitably assist the other in reconstructing the trajectory of past events - historical and/or linguistic.  

Linguists - and those working in the area of contact linguistics in particular - often rely on documentary historical evidence (e.g., from the slave trade) to advance theoretical claims (e.g., creolization and the various processes lead to the formation of some contact vernaculars). Vice versa, historians at times seek to bolster their conclusions by examining evidence from the domain of language history. A principal aim of this session is to offer an up-to-date account of ongoing research in which historians and linguists use mutually complementary data to reconstruct the history of a given speech community.
