Workshop: The Empirical Analysis of Multimodal Meaning in Interactional Alignment

Date: 19-Sep-2012 - 21-Sep-2012
Location: Leuven, Belgium

Linguistic Field(s): Cognitive Science; Discourse Analysis; Psycholinguistics

Meeting Description:

Researchers in linguistics are taking into account an ever wider set of semiotic channels when studying language and communication. This growing attention for a multimodal approach towards linguistics requires challenging new empirical means and methods. This workshop brings together experts in a wide variety of domains:

- Syntax
- Prosody
- Gesture
- Eye gaze
- Psychophysiology

To have a clear and common focus, each of the experts will use the same video examples and tackle the same topic. The video data are excerpts from the multimodal corpora managed by the CHIL research unit. The phenomenon that will be put under scrutiny is that of 'interactive alignment' (i.e. copying behaviour, mimicry, accommodation, co-ordination between speakers in face-to-face interaction). The topic of interactive alignment will be used as a lever to discuss methodological, analytical and theoretical issues in each of the experts' research fields. The workshop participants, together with the experts, will perform hands-on analyses of the video data. This integrated, interdisciplinary and data-driven approach will provide participants with useful insights in working with multimodal conversational data from multiple angles.

Target Audience:

PhD-students and researchers interested in the process of multimodal meaning making in interactional discourse. Although 'interactive alignment' will be the central topic, the general focus will include different aspects of the empirical analysis of multimodal interaction in general.

Practical Information:

The workshop will be held at the faculty of arts in the city centre of Leuven (BE) and is funded by the Flemish government (project on education for young researchers). Participation to the workshop is free of charge, but subscription is compulsory. To subscribe (or for more information), please e-mail Bert Oben (bert.oben at arts.kuleuven.be) with your name, affiliation and a short description of how your research ties in with the topic of the workshop.
