Special Issue Call for Papers
Title: Reading and Writing: Insights from the Alphasyllabaries of South and Southeast Asia

Guest Editors: Sonali Nag - The Promise Foundation (India) and University of Oxford (UK)
Charles Perfetti - University of Pittsburgh (USA)

Writing Systems Research invites submissions to be considered for publication in a Special Issue entitled:

Reading and Writing: Insights from the Alphasyllabaries of South and Southeast Asia.

The issue is scheduled for publication by end-2013.

To date, it is the preponderance of research in alphabetic languages and the logographic Chinese that has helped clarify the associations between language, writing and reading. Not much is known about the Indic alphasyllabaries of South and Southeast Asia, a variety of writing that represents phonemic information in syllable blocks called akshara. We wish to focus in this Special Issue on evidence from behavioural and neuroscience research as well as scholarly articles about the nature of reading and writing in the akshara languages. We are interested in studies that examine how the writing system maps on to surface features such as phonological units and words, as well as the productive relationship between written language and deeper aspects such as morphology, syntax and etymology.

Topics may include the nature of orthographic knowledge, the processes involved in reading and writing and associations between all aspects of language and literacy. Empirical studies may be with child and adult populations, bi- and multilingual populations and groups with special needs.

Submission:
Expressions of interest must be submitted by 30th September (2012) to Sonali Nag
(sonalinag at t-p-f.org) or Charles Perfetti (perfetti at pitt.edu).

General guidelines on manuscript preparation can be found at:

ions

Shortlisted submissions should be submitted by 31st January (2013) through the journal's ScholarOne Manuscripts website at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/wsr selecting the Writing Systems of
South and Southeast Asia manuscript type.

Paper correspondence should be sent to Sonali Nag, The Promise Foundation, 231, C. H. Layout, Sompur Gate, Sarjapura, Bangalore, 562125, India.
