We would like to bring two items to your attention regarding new NSF funding
opportunities for interdisciplinary activities and research:
1. Program announcement for the FY2013 competition: Building Community and
Capacity for Data-Intensive Research in the SBE Sciences and in EHR
(BCC-SBE/EHR)
2. Solicitation for the FY2013 INSPIRE Competition

1. Building Community and Capacity for Data-Intensive Research in the SBE
Sciences and in EHR (BCC-SBE/EHR)
The Directorates for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) and for
Education and Human Resources (EHR) and the Office of Cyberinfrastructure have
released the program solicitation, NSF13-519, for the FY2013 competition:
Building Community and Capacity for Data-Intensive Research in the SBE
Sciences and in EHR (BCC-SBE/EHR;
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2013/nsf13519/nsf13519.pdf).

The purpose of BCC-SBE/EHR is to enable research communities to develop
visions, teams, and capabilities dedicated to creating new, large-scale,
next-generation data resources and relevant analytic techniques to advance
fundamental, interdisciplinary research for the SBE and EHR areas of research.
Successful proposals will outline activities that will have significant
impacts across multiple fields by enabling new types of data-intensive
research. Investigators should think broadly and create a vision that extends
intellectually across multiple disciplines and that includes--but is not
limited to--the SBE or EHR areas of research.

The deadline for full proposals is February 17, 2013 (5 pm proposer's local
time).

Abstracts of awards made from the FY2012 competition can be viewed at:
http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/advancedSearchResult?ProgOrganization=04000000&
ProgEleCode=8068.

2. INSPIRE 2013
NSF has issued the FY 2013 INSPIRE (Integrated NSF Support Promoting
Interdisciplinary Research and Education) solicitation, NSF 13-518, and has
posted a web page describing the new INSPIRE competition at:
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504852. The solicitation
(http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2013/nsf13518/nsf13518.pdf) identifies conditions and
proposal requirements that are specific to the application process for FY2013
INSPIRE.

In brief, the INSPIRE awards program is intended to encourage investigators to
submit bold, exceptional proposals that some may consider to be at a
disadvantage in a standard NSF review process managed by one or more
disciplinary programs. INSPIRE is open to potentially transformative,
interdisciplinary proposals on any NSF-supported topic, submitted *by
invitation only* after a preliminary inquiry process initiated by submission
of a required Letter of Intent from prospective applicants.

FY 2013 INSPIRE consists of three funding opportunities with an estimated
45-60 awards competing for about $63 million. While you may be familiar with
the CREATIV competition last year (now referred to as INSPIRE Track 1), the
next iteration of INSPIRE has introduced both a second track for larger (up to
$3M) awards and a Director's Award:

* INSPIRE Track 1, similar to the FY 2012 CREATIV mechanism
(http://nsf.gov/pubs/2012/nsf12011/nsf12011.jsp), but with a fixed deadline
and subsequent review period rather than a rolling process as in FY12

* INSPIRE Track 2, ''mid-scale'' projects larger than Track 1

* Director’s INSPIRE Awards, prestigious grants to single investigators for
interdisciplinary research

A FAQ sheet for the FY2013 competition is in preparation and will be posted on
the INSPIRE web page soon.

INSPIRE Due Dates:
Letter of Intent Window for INSPIRE Track 2 Inquiries: December 10, 2012 -
February 20, 2013
Letter of Intent Window for INSPIRE Track 1 Inquiries: December 10, 2012 -
March 29, 2013

Deadline Date for INSPIRE Track 2 Full Proposals: May 13, 2013
Deadline Date for INSPIRE Track 1 Full Proposals: May 29, 2013
Deadline Date, Director's INSPIRE Awards Full Proposals: May 29, 2013

Full proposal submission is by invitation only, based on evaluation by NSF
staff of the required Letter of Intent.

Investigators are encouraged to contact program officers from the relevant
disciplinary programs to discuss their proposed, interdisciplinary project
prior to submitting their Letter of Intent.
