A special issue of the Journal of Specialised Translation (www.jostrans.org):
Translation and the Contemporary Survival of Languages and Cultures

JoSTrans, The Journal of Specialised Translation, is an electronic,
peer-reviewed journal bringing non-literary translation issues to the fore.
Published bi-annually, it includes articles, reviews and streamed interviews
by translation scholars and professionals.

The Journal of Specialised Translation will publish a special issue on
Translation and the Contemporary Survival of Languages and Cultures in January
2015 (issue n°23). Of the nearly 7,000 languages spoken by 7 billion human
beings globally, linguists project that we currently lose one at the rate of
every two weeks. The clock is urgently ticking for many, thrusting them into
the 'endangered' zone. What strategies for survival are there? Do we
collectively value linguistic and cultural diversity enough to care about its
future? In this issue, we shall explore the role of translation in relation to
these questions, set against the backdrop of a multilingual world mediated
through global communication.

Contributions might relate to but are not limited to:

•-Provision of translation services in communities.
•-Use of world languages as translation relay languages.
•-Machine translation: publicly accessible and/or professional.
•-Localization and translation technologies for information sharing.
•-Translation and endangered languages projects.
•-Ethics of translation in globalization.
•-Translation and orality, literacy, digital literacy.
•-Using translation for language revitalization.

We welcome contributions of full length papers (between 4000-7000 words,
including endnotes and references), reviews (500-800 words) and shorter, more
practical pieces for the Translator's Corner section of the Journal. The
journal style sheet can be downloaded from http://www.jostrans.org/style.php.

•All contributions will be peer-reviewed.

•Please send contributions to guest editor Debbie Folaron at
debbie.folaron at concordia.ca with the Subject line JoSTrans Issue 23 by March
15th 2014.
