The editor of the International Journal of Lexicography, Paul Bogaards, passed
away on 3 October 2012, after a short illness.

Paul Bogaards was born on 22 October 1940 in Leiden. He studied French
language and literature at the Free University of Amsterdam and the University
of Leiden, graduating in 1968. From 1976 until his retirement in 2002, he
worked in the French Department of Leiden University. As a researcher he was
active in the fields of lexicography and vocabulary acquisition, where he had
particular attention for French as well as for general theoretical issues. He
published numerous articles in various journals and handbooks, and regularly
contributed to the congresses of the European Association of Lexicography
(Euralex), of which he had been a member since 1990. At the 2010 Euralex
Congress he gave a keynote lecture on “Dictionaries and Second Language
Acquisition”. He also published a monograph “On ne parle pas franglais”
(2008), in which he argued against Etiembe’s thesis that French is threatened
by the use of English loanwords. From 1988 until 2008 he was the main editor
for the bilingual French and Dutch dictionaries of Van Dale, a task crowned by
the two-volume Robert & Van Dale French-Dutch and Dutch-French dictionaries in
2007. In 2002 he was made a “chevalier dans l’ordre des Palmes Académiques”
for his services to French language and culture.

For many of us, he will be best remembered for his work as editor of the
International Journal of Lexicography. He was appointed editor in 2002 and
with his sharp judgement for quality, his way of encouraging authors of good
contributions, and his independent mind managed to make IJL the leading
journal in the field of lexicography and one of the key journals in the
broader field of linguistics. Only weeks before his death he had been
appointed for a third five-year term as editor. He will be greatly missed in
Euralex and more generally in lexicography. A more detailed obituary with a
list of publications appears in the December issue of IJL.
