Call Deadline: 15-Mar-2012

Meeting Description:

This year's Meeting on English Language Teaching (MELT) is the first annual meeting hosted by the Ecole de langues at the University of Quebec at Montreal. Its purpose is to provide a forum to explore various research areas relevant to English language teaching.

The 1st annual MELT will focus on language teaching for adults through other subjects. In particular, this meeting will address the ways in which L2 learning can be enhanced through content course material.

The theme of this year's MELT is the use of content and authentic material from such domains as linguistic theory, literature, film, and history in second language teaching for adults. While language learning through content courses is not a new practice, the exact role of the content material as opposed to language instruction itself in an ESL class is a topic of diverse research. In order to better understand the issues and implications of this pedagogy, scholars in the field of content-based language teaching, especially for adult learners, are invited to share their findings at MELT.

Call for Papers:

Presentations on, but not limited to, the following subjects are encouraged:

- The advantages and/or disadvantages of language learning in a class where language is not the sole object of study
- Linguistic evaluation in a content-based language class
- Methods of language instruction in a content-based language class

Even though the conference is primarily aimed at English language teachers, we welcome research on content-based instruction on languages other than English.

Talks will be 30 minutes long, followed by 10 minutes of discussion. We ask that the abstracts be at most two pages long (including bibliography), font size 12, and one inch margins. Each abstract should be submitted in two copies, pdf. format, to melt at uqam.ca (please include 'abstract' in the subject heading of the email). One of these abstracts should be anonymous.

Abstracts and presentations may be in English or French.

Abstract deadline: March 15, 2012
Notification of acceptance: March 30, 2012
