Description:

Three PhD students 'Bridging the Unbridgable: Linguists, Prescriptivists 
and the General Public'

The project, which started on 1 September 2011 and will run until 31 
December 2016, is led by Prof. I.M. Tieken-Boon van Ostade 
(http://hum.leiden.edu/lucl/hison-conference/organising-committee/ingrid-tieken.html).

PhD projects will be sent to interested candidates upon request. 

The candidate will be expected to: 
-  Conduct original research on a topic specified within the context of the 
relevant research project (see a. or b. above)
-  Write a PhD thesis
-  Submit research results for publication in peer-reviewed academic 
journals
-  Present papers at (international) conferences
-  Do some teaching in the second and third year of the appointment
-  Participate in activities in the relevant research project as well as within 
LUCL as a whole

The candidate should have:
-  Master's or equivalent degree in a relevant field (the MA thesis should 
be completed before the start of the appointment)
-  An inquisitive, enterprising and creative mind and excellent analytical 
skills, evidence of which should emerge from the MA thesis
-  Good English writing and presentation skills
-  The ability to work both independently and as part of a research team

We offer:
The appointment as a PhD student will be for a period of four years 
(initially for a period of 18 months with an extension of 30 months after 
positive evaluation of progress and skills development) leading to a 
successful completion of a PhD thesis. The gross monthly salary is set on 
EUR 2.042,00 in the first year increasing monthly to EUR 2.612,00 gross 
per month in the final year. See website for further details.

1.  A letter stating your motivation for the position, including a stated and 
motivated preference for the relevant project as well as for the specific 
PhD topic within that project
2.  CV
3.  Contact details of two academic references. One of these should be 
your MA thesis supervisor
4.  A three-page discussion of the subject of the selected PhD topic, in 
which you should address the following issues: 
a.  Why this particular topic is of interest to you 
b.  The methodology you will expect to adopt 
c.  The aims of the research in the context of the wider research project
5.  Copies of your academic transcripts (Dutch cijferlijst)
6.  Copy of your MA thesis, and any other publication(s) in English that 
may be illustrative of your research qualities
