18th Himalayan Languages Symposium

We are pleased to announce that the 18th Himalayan Languages Symposium will be held at the Department of Linguistics, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India on 10-12 September 2012.

The Himalayan Languages Symposium is an annual event that provides an open scholarly forum for scholars working on various aspects of languages of the greater Himalayas region: Burushaski, Kusunda, Tibeto-Burman, Indo-Iranian, Austroasiatic, Kradai, Andamanese, Nahali, Dravidian, or any other language of the area. The Symposium, in addition to Himalayan languages, also welcomes contributions from related disciplines such as history, anthropology, archaeology and prehistory of the greater Himalayan regions. Workshop:

In addition, we also plan to hold a one-day workshop on 'Resource Creation and Technology Development in Himalayan/Lesser-known Languages'.

Registration:

All the participants are required to register by filling the registration form after receiving the invitation letter. Registration Fee: Rs. 5000/- (with accommodation), Rs. 3000/- (without accommodation). [Student participants may apply for partial fee waiver after receiving the invitation letter]. Registration fee, to be paid on arrival at BHU, includes symposium kits, breakfast and lunch. The accompanying person will also have to register. The participants are requested to make their own travel arrangements and arrange for funding from their parent organizations. International participants who need a visa to enter India may contact the Indian Consulate for visa procedures. The invitation letter may be attached with the visa application. Call for Papers:

We invite the prospective participants to submit an abstract of not more than 300 words (maximum one page) in 12 pt font including data on a topic from the following broad indicative areas via the Easy Chair facility on the website (http://www.himalayansymposium.org/). We also plan to bring out pre-symposium proceedings of the accepted papers.

1. Linguistic description (Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics)
2. Historical linguistics
3. Biolinguistics
4. Typology
5. Field reports
6. Corpus-based analysis
7. Technology for Himalayan languages
8. Ethnology and folklore

Works on anthropological, historical, or archaeological aspects dealing with a language or language community of the greater Himalayan region are also welcome.
