Abstract:

The "European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages" of the Council of
Europe now applies in 25 states. The articles in this volume examine the basic
concept and the language planning measures of the treaty from the linguistic
and legal perspectives. A large number of concrete case studies are used to
investigate whether the Charter is adequate to current European situations of
multilingualism and whether it provides convincing solutions to situations of
linguistic conflict.
