Abstract:

Die nationale Identität Deutschlands ist im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert zunächst 
über die Kultur und Sprache bestimmt worden. Erst spät entwickelte sich die 
Idee einer staatlichen Einheit, parallel mit dem Verfall der feudalen Strukturen 
und dem Aufstieg des Bürgertums, zu einer politischen Vorstellung und 
Forderung. Und erst in den Jahren zwischen der Französischen Revolution und 
dem Wiener Kongress erhielt das Konzept der Nation in Deutschland seine 
moderne Bedeutung. Die Übersetzung spielt in diesem Prozess eine besondere 
Rolle. Die Beiträge des Bandes untersuchen die Frage, inwiefern 
philosophische, ästhetische und politische Vorstellungen aus anderen 
europäischen Literaturen die Ausbildung einer nationalen Eigenart sowie eines 
nationalen Bewusstseins in Deutschland im 19. Jahrhundert beeinflusst oder 
bestimmt haben.
