Abstract:

Das Buch entstand aus der Arbeit am Ortsnamenbuch des Kantons Bern. Es 
ergänzt das Ortsnamenbuch um einen spezifischen Blickwinkel, der dort so 
bisher nicht vorkommt. Die Studie betrachtet die volksetymologische Deutung 
geografischer Namen aus zwei Blickwinkeln: einerseits klassisch als 
Analogieerscheinung bei der Remotivierung isolierter Wörter; die Untersuchung 
von Toponymen als "Paradefeld" der Volksetymologie ergibt eine exemplarische 
Geschichte der volksetymologischen Deutung in unterschiedlichen Kategorien, 
aber kein konsistentes Einteilungssystem. Andererseits wird Volksetymologie 
als Erscheinung des mentalen Lexikons untersucht, eine Verknüpfung, die 
bisher praktisch unberücksichtigt blieb, sich aber für beide Seiten als 
befruchtend erweisen könnte.
