Description:

We wish to provide advanced notice of the availability of University of Canterbury
Doctoral Scholarships, which are tenable in the University of Canterbury Department
of Linguistics in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Linguistics at the University of Canterbury houses several large corpora, including the
ONZE corpus (Origins of New Zealand English). The program is part of the New
Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour (NZILBB), and as such, presents
substantial opportunities for multi-disciplinary research
(http://www.nzilbb.canterbury.ac.nz). NZILBB also houses a variety of state-of-the-
art equipment, including Ultrasound, Electromagnetic Articulography, EEG, and 3D
motion tracking.

UC Scholarships provide NZ$20,000/year for three years, and cover the university
fees. There are no restrictions on regional origin of the applicants. The application
deadline is May 15. Very highly ranked applicants for UC scholarships are awarded
Canterbury Scholarships or UC International Doctoral Scholarships, which provide
NZ$25,000/year + fees.

If you are an interested candidate, but there is a compelling reason why the May
deadline is impractical for you, please get in touch to discuss. For exceptional
applicants facing time pressures, and needing to choose between competing offers,
scholarship offers can sometimes be made ahead of the UC deadline via the New
Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour.

The PhD at the University of Canterbury is by thesis only, and potential candidates
should, in the first instance, make contact with a potential supervisor.

The currently available supervisors in the linguistics department are: Lynn Clark, Jen
Hay, Beth Hume, Heidi Quinn and Kevin Watson.

Lynn Clark - language variation & change, sociophonetics, usage-based models of
language
