Meeting Description: 

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Rochester will hold a 
Workshop on Language Documentation and Field Linguistics on Friday 
and Saturday, March 24 - 25, 2012.  The Workshop is open to 
undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in Field 
Linguistics and Language Documentation.  The workshop will consist 
of four sessions covering topics in the methodologies of language 
documentation and field linguistics as an introduction to current 
Language Documentation practices. Registration is open and is limited 
to the first 40 undergraduate participants. Some travel funding is 
available. We encourage participation of undergraduate ASL Signers.  
ASL interpreters can be provided upon request. Please contact Patty 
Clark at clark at bcs.rochester.edu by 6pm on March, 17, 2012. 
Interpreters cannot be guaranteed after that date.

Workshop leaders:

Wilson de Lima Silva, Department of Linguistics, University of

Ted Supalla, Brain & Cognitive Sciences, Linguistics, and American Sign 
Language, University of Rochester

The workshop will consist of 2 sessions each day with time for 
discussion, a Friday evening panel and closing lecture on Saturday. The 
sessions are:

1. Language Documentation and Fieldwork preparation
2. Elicitation and recording (audio and video) techniques
3. Processing and analysis of collected data (software)
4. Archiving and metadata and data management


Panel on Friday evening on the ethics of fieldwork and language 
documentation, data collection/management and data dissemination.

Keynote lecture (Saturday afternoon): 

'A practical epistemology for semantic elicitation, in the field and 
elsewhere'
