Oklahoma Workshop on Native American Languages
Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15, 2012, Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, Oklahoma
 
The Center for Tribal Studies at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK, announces its 5th annual Oklahoma Workshop on Native American Languages. OWNAL focuses on descriptive studies of indigenous languages of the Americas. This weekend workshop takes place at the end of the 40th Annual Symposium on the American Indian (April 9-14, 2012). The 40th Annual Symposium on the American Indian will have the following theme: 

The Journey of Sovereign Nations: Self-determination and Human Rights

Prior to OWNAL, a Language Revitalization workshop, also part of the Symposium, will take place on the Thursday and Friday preceding OWNAL. The Language Revitalization Workshop theme is 'The Grammar of Sound: Creating Sound Memories for Teaching Your Language.'

The keynote speaker at OWNAL this year is Dr. Racquel Yamada of the University of Central Arkansas.  Dr. Yamada received her PhD from the University of Oregon in 2010 and has published widely on community empowerment models in language documentation. Together with community members, Dr. Yamada has expanded the documentary corpus of the Aretyry dialect of Kari'nja (Cariban). Projects include language documentation, revitalization, and curriculum development. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Central Arkansas.

After the Saturday workshop, participants may attend the Saturday Powwow that brings together well-known dancers and local Oklahoma tribes.

Registration: $40, $20 for students. (This fee is primarily a fundraiser for the symposium; it also pays for refreshments and a catered lunch.) Make checks payable to NSU with 'Center for Tribal Studies-OWNAL' in the memo.

40th Annual Symposium on the American Indian
The Journey of Sovereign Nations: Self-determination and Human Rights

The 40th Annual Symposium on the American Indian will reflect back on the past four decades of development and change for American Indian tribes. From the 1970s emphasis on self-determination, revitalization of tribal governments, and Indian activism, to the more recent Cobell trust funds settlement and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, American Indians have been on the move as advocates for justice, human rights, and reparation.  The journey continues with an eye on the well-being of future generations. 

Call for Papers:

The deadline for abstracts is February 3, 2012. Talks are 20 minutes in length, followed by 10 minutes for questions. Abstracts must be 500 words or less and include contact details, institutional affiliation, and title (professor, student, or independent scholar.) We also welcome poster presentations dealing with any topic relating to the languages/language families of the Americas. Poster presentations are especially encouraged from students and researchers early in their careers who want to present work-in-progress or receive more individual feedback than allowed for by the 10-minute discussion in the paper presentations. Please submit a 250-word abstract following the guidelines for paper presentations. State 'poster presentation' under the title. Poster presentations should follow the LSA poster presentation guidelines at:
